The Correspondent Audiobook Review: A Life Told Through Letters

Not every worthwhile audiobook is climbing the charts this week. The Correspondent is the kind of book this site exists to surface - a Women's Prize for Fiction winner, over two million copies sold, and a genuinely unusual structure that makes the audiobook format more interesting than the page.

What it's about

Sybil Van Antwerp has spent her life making sense of the world through letters. Most mornings around half past ten, she sits down to write - to her brother, to her best friend, to a university president who won't let her audit a class she wants to take, to Joan Didion and Larry McMurtry to tell them exactly what she thought of their latest books, and to one person she writes to often but never actually sends anything.

A mother, grandmother, wife, divorcée, and distinguished lawyer, Sybil expects her life to keep going as it always has. But when letters from her past resurface, they force her to confront one of the most painful periods of her life - and to finally read the letter she's been writing, in her head, for years.

The entire novel unfolds through correspondence, which makes Sybil's voice - witty, sharp, occasionally imperious - the thing the whole book runs on.

The audiobook production

Because the novel is built from dozens of different letters and correspondents, this edition uses a genuinely large cast - Maggi-Meg Reed, Jane Oppenheimer, Carly Robins, and a wide supporting ensemble - to voice the different people writing to and about Sybil across the decades. For an epistolary novel specifically, that's the right call: hearing distinct voices for each correspondent does work that would otherwise fall entirely on the reader's imagination in print.

Who it's for

Readers who love character studies over plot mechanics will find a lot here - this is a book about the accumulated weight of a fully lived life, told in fragments rather than a straight line. It's also a strong pick if you enjoy epistolary fiction generally (think 84, Charing Cross Road or The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society) and want to hear that format performed by a full cast instead of read straight through by one narrator.

The verdict

The Correspondent won its prizes for a reason, and the audiobook's full-cast approach to an epistolary structure is exactly the kind of production choice that makes the listen better than the read. Worth seeking out even though it isn't the newest thing on the shelf.
